Ashley Karrell

Ashley is an award-winning director, producer and photographer with over two decades of experience.

His work includes films, visual art, theatre productions, commercial and experimental video across and outside of the UK. Ashley is captivated by stories about human experiences and the exploring of community, being socially engaging, and internationally-minded.

He is known for:

  • #BlackBoyJoyGone - A hybrid film nominated for 2023 Grierson Awards and BFI funded by Doc Society;

  • Carnival Messiah - The feature theatre film and documentary of Geraldine Connorʼs masterpiece. The film debuted at the Leeds International Film Festival and won the Peopleʼs Choice Award for Best Documentary at the Trinidad Film Festival;

  • Missing Portraits Series - First black portrait photographer commissioned for the permanent collection of the stately home of Harewood House, featuring Arthur France MBE and David Harewood OBE;

  • Moon Palace – A Stargazers Journey - Multi award-winning  SKY Arts / Leeds 2023 / The Space commissioned short documentary; 

  • DISPLACED - The multi award-winning ACE funded dance theatre film;

  • NEGUS - Sadlers Wells funded Afro-Magical film;

  • Reckoning - Journey’s Festival - ArtReach funded refugee dance and animation film

  • Siren Calls: To An Illusive Journey - Serendipity’s documentary; 

  • UnLimited Desires - The South Asian dance-drama

  • Tales Of The Winter Solstice - Harewood House Trust funded poetic dance film; 

  • #BlackBoyJoyGone: REALISE - Touring theatres with the new live performance show and film;

  • Expression Of You - A living art project encompassing so far 450 women and female identifying participants.
